Red Light Secrets: Amsterdam’s Museum of Prostitution

In short

Red Light Secrets is a former brothel turned museum in the middle of De Wallen. Count on about €14.50 and about an hour, and expect an honest, tasteful visit. Book online to skip the queue and go early in your trip, and everything you see afterwards will make a lot more sense.

If you spend money on one thing in the Red Light District, make it this. Red Light Secrets, the Museum of Prostitution, sits inside a former working brothel on the Oudezijds Achterburgwal canal. It is the best single hour you can spend understanding the area you are wandering through.

What it is

Housed in a genuine former brothel at Oudezijds Achterburgwal 60h, right in the heart of De Wallen, Red Light Secrets is a small museum that puts you on the other side of the glass, quite literally. You take a seat in a real window and see the street the way a worker does. From there you move through the rooms and listen to candid, unpolished accounts from the people who work here: the good days, the odd requests, the fears, the boundaries, the humanity of it all.

Why it’s worth it

  • It changes your perspective. After ten minutes inside, the windows outside stop being a spectacle and start to make sense.
  • It’s honest. The tone is neither seedy nor preachy. You get real accounts of a real job, respectfully told.
  • It’s cheap and quick. Expect to pay around €14.50 (check the current price on the day) and to spend 45 minutes to an hour. Good value in a pricey city.
  • It’s tasteful. Fine for couples and the merely curious. The focus is educational rather than explicit.

Practical bits

  • Where: Oudezijds Achterburgwal 60h, dead centre of De Wallen.
  • Price: about €14.50. Booking online is usually a little cheaper and lets you skip the queue.
  • Time needed: 45–60 minutes.
  • Good to know: it is a self-guided walk-through with audio and displays, and it keeps late hours (check the current times). That makes it a sensible first stop before you explore the streets outside.

While you’re on the same street

A former sex worker founded the Prostitution Information Center (PIC), a small non-profit a short walk away near the Oude Kerk. It exists to give straight answers about the work, so check what it currently offers before you go. Guided tours past the windows have been banned since 2020, so don’t expect a street tour. See the museum first, then wander the streets, and you'll leave De Wallen with a much better grasp of the area than most of the people around you.
