Sauna Clubs in Amsterdam: What They Are

In short

sauna clubs are legal adult spas with a swingers vibe, the live shows are cheeky fun, the museums are worth an hour, and the golden rules never change: 18+, consent, discretion, no photos.

Beyond the red windows, Amsterdam has a whole grown-up nightlife that most guidebooks politely skip: erotic theatres, sex-positive sauna clubs, museums with a wink, and late bars where nobody is judging anyone. This is a plain map of the city’s adult side, covering what these places are and how to behave in them.

Sauna clubs: not your hotel spa

Visitors often end up puzzled by these, so let's sort it out. In the Netherlands, as in neighbouring Germany, a "sauna club" (sometimes called a wellness club) is an adults-only venue where clothing is optional. It is built around real saunas, pools and lounge areas, and the atmosphere is sexually open and friendly to swingers. Think of something between a spa and an adult social club. These places operate legally, are run by professionals, keep things very clean and take discretion seriously.

What to know before you go:

  • Couples and single visitors often have different rules and entry nights, so check the venue’s site first.
  • Etiquette is everything: “no” means no, consent is the whole culture, and staring or pushiness gets you shown the door.
  • Bring a towel and flip-flops (or rent them) and expect a proper spa hygiene routine.
  • Phones away, always. The same golden rule as in the Red Light District: no photos, no exceptions.

Many of these clubs sit on the outskirts of the city or just beyond its borders, away from the touristy centre. Part of the appeal is that they are quiet and secluded, a sharp contrast to the neon-lit crowds downtown.

Erotic theatres & live shows

The live-show venues around De Wallen are a rite of passage: cheeky, campy and closer to Moulin Rouge with a shrug than to anything seedy. Entry is typically around €40–€50, often with a drink included, though prices change, so check on the day. Go with a sense of humour rather than a spreadsheet of expectations.

Museums with a raised eyebrow

  • Red Light Secrets: a museum of prostitution inside a former brothel. Genuinely educational, and the best context you’ll get for the whole neighbourhood.
  • The Amsterdam sex museums on Damrak: silly, historical and cheap. Good for a rainy-afternoon giggle, but don’t expect depth.

Other corners worth knowing

  • Singel red-light area: a smaller, quieter window district near the flower market, with far fewer stag parties.
  • Warmoesstraat & the Leather scene: Amsterdam has a long, proud LGBTQ+ and fetish nightlife around here and along the Reguliersdwarsstraat. Welcoming, established and unbothered.
  • Late bars: in this city “adult” mostly means relaxed. Plenty of the best nights out are simply a brown café, a canal and no last-orders panic.

The one paragraph that keeps you safe and welcome

Amsterdam’s adult scene works because everyone follows the same unspoken deal: consent first, discretion always, phones away, and respect for the professionals who run and work in these spaces. Stick to it and you’ll be treated like a grown-up. Ignore it and you’ll be treated like a tourist, and not the good kind.
