Groningen has no gay strip. Its queer nightlife lives inside the wider alternative scene and appears as recurring nights rather than permanent addresses. Watch Vera (Oosterstraat) and Simplon (Boterdiep) for queer-friendly club nights, lean on COC Groningen for lower-pressure community evenings, and time a visit for summer Pride if you can, when the whole scattered network shows up in one place.
Groningen doesn’t have a gay street, and it doesn’t need one. The city is small enough that word travels fast, and queer nightlife here has no postcode. It is a network of basements, back rooms and one-off nights that the right people always seem to know about. Find the network and you’ll find some of the warmest, sweatiest and most unpretentious dancing in the north of the country.
A Small City, No Gay Street, and That’s the Point
If you’re coming from Amsterdam expecting a Reguliersdwarsstraat equivalent, adjust your expectations. Groningen is a student city of roughly 230,000 people, and its queer scene isn’t packed into a strip of dedicated bars. It is woven into the wider alternative and student nightlife, and shows up as recurring parties, themed club nights and community events rather than permanent neon-lit institutions. There is a real upside: the crowd tends to be mixed, welcoming and far less about performance than in the gay districts of bigger cities. Nobody’s watching the door to see if you fit. The flip side is that you need to do a little homework before you arrive. The good nights live on Instagram stories and mailing lists as much as on street signs.
Vera and the Alternative Backbone
Start with Vera on Oosterstraat, a long-running, musician-friendly venue that has been at the centre of Groningen’s alternative scene since the 1960s. It isn’t a queer club by mandate, but its DIY, unpretentious, music-first approach has made it a natural home for queer-friendly nights, drag-adjacent programming and left-field club bookings. The crowd is far more diverse than at your average mainstream discotheek. The bar is a good barometer for the night: if it’s packed with a mixed, unbothered crowd and the music isn’t top-40, you’re in the right building. Check what’s actually on before you go. Vera’s calendar swings from gig nights to excellent late club sets, and the queer-leaning ones don’t happen every week.
Simplon and the Boterdiep Underground
A short bike ride north along Boterdiep you’ll find Simplon, the city’s other stronghold of alternative culture. It is part youth centre, part gig venue and part club, and its programming often veers into techno, house and underground electronic nights, giving queer collectives and DJs proper stage time. This is where you’ll find the sweatier, darker, more electronic side of things, closer in feel to a Berlin club than a slick city-centre disco, with a soundsystem that doesn’t mess around. Club nights typically cost somewhere between €8 and €15 to get in, depending on who’s booked. Cards are normally fine, but bring a little cash in case. The crowd tends to be studenty, tattooed and unfazed by labels. Again, this runs on specific events rather than a nightly schedule, so check the agenda before you plan your night around it.
COC Groningen and the Community Nights
As the local branch of the country’s oldest LGBTQ+ rights organisation, COC Groningen works largely behind the scenes to sustain the scene between the major club nights. Besides advocacy work and youth support groups, COC branches across the country have a long tradition of hosting their own bar evenings and social gatherings. These are often cheap or donation-based, and deliberately relaxed and low-pressure: decent lighting, decent conversation, no meat-market vibe. The schedule shifts around and isn’t always advertised beyond queer circles, so check their own channels directly or ask around at Vera or Simplon to find out what’s on that month. If you’re new to the city, or travelling alone and want a gentle way in rather than a dark dancefloor, this is the natural starting point.
Pride in the North
Groningen runs its own Pride celebration in summer. It is smaller and scrappier than Amsterdam’s canal spectacle, but it has real neighbourhood warmth: a parade or walk through the centre, stalls and stages in the middle of town, and a proper cross-section of the city turning out rather than tourists with cameras. It’s the one weekend of the year when the scattered, word-of-mouth scene becomes visible and loud in daylight. Club nights orbit the main event, and venues across the alternative scene often run Pride-adjacent programming for a few days either side. Dates and programme change from year to year, so check before you book. If your visit lines up with it, plan your trip around it. It is the easiest way to meet the whole scene in one weekend rather than piecing it together night by night.
Reading the Room Elsewhere
Groningen’s big mainstream clubs, such as the Poelestraat cluster and the student-heavy discotheken around the centre, aren’t hostile spaces, but they aren’t built for you either. Expect a young, straight-default crowd and door policies that care more about age and shoes than anything else. Treat that as expectation-setting rather than a warning: the best nights are off to the side, at Vera, at Simplon, or at a COC evening you heard about from someone at the bar. A few notes on etiquette and safety:
- Ask before you assume. Groningen’s queer scene is mixed and low-drama, but it’s still small, so treat it with the respect you’d want shown to you.
- Carry some cash for smaller nights. Bigger venues take cards easily, but door money for pop-up or community events is sometimes cash-only.
- Watch your drink. Spiking incidents get reported in Dutch nightlife like anywhere else, so keep your glass covered and your group close, whatever the venue.
- Cycling home tipsy is a Groningen rite of passage, but the canals are unforgiving and poorly lit in places. Walk the bike if you’re properly done in.
- No photos of strangers. This goes double on a queer dancefloor, where not everyone is out everywhere. Ask first, and never sneak a shot.
