MAASTRICHT AFTER DARK.
Maastricht is the Netherlands at its most Burgundian: cobbled squares, café terraces and a border-town buzz, with Belgium on the doorstep, Germany a short drive away and France not much further. It is a student city with a softer, more European feel than the Randstad, the sort of place where long lunches turn into even longer nights. Coffeeshops are the sticking point. Maastricht applies the residents criterion, so tourists are turned away at the door, and the town has argued over its cannabis policy for years.
